INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY - 21 JUNE 2020

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that has its roots in India. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness around the world, regarding the many benefits of practicing the art. The day is being celebrated since 21 June 2015.
Theme for International Yoga Day, 21 JUNE 2020
The theme for International Yoga Day 2020 is “Yoga at home and Yoga with family”.According to the United Nations, while social distancing measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic have shut down yoga studios, practitioners have turned to home practice and online resources. The theme highlights that yoga is a powerful tool to deal with stress of uncertainty and isolation and helps maintaining physical well-being.
 Importance of Yoga in COVID-19
Yoga has been beneficial for years and not only for losing weight but also for keeping our mind and soul calm. Yoga plays a significant role during the world crisis as it has healing and other alternative therapies. We have seen that the virus is increasing day by day and by staying home people are going through anxiety and depression. To feel happy and stress-free yoga can be the best therapeutic, practicing yoga helps to relieve stress and our mind cool.
Another benefit of yoga during COVID-19 is that yoga helps in boosting our immunity and it has been found that yoga helps to cure breathing problems. By doing Pranayama breathing exercise you can increase your oxygen intake up to five times. The more oxygen-rich blood to the brain, heart, lungs, and digestive organs can help to improve the functioning of these organs and improve our overall health.

ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE- 21 JUNE 2020

"Annular eclipses are similar to total eclipses in that the moon, Earth and sun are aligned so that the moon moves directly in front of the Sun as viewed from Earth,"

"But a total eclipse does not happen, that is the moon does not completely block out the visible disk of the sun because the moon is farther away and so its apparent size in the sky is [slightly] smaller than the sun. This means that a tiny ring of annulus of the solar disk is visible around the moon."
Sunday's solar eclipse is what is known as an annular eclipse, in which the moon does not completely cover the sun as it passes between the star and Earth as seen from our planet. Instead, a ring of sunlight will still shine around the outer edge, hence its nickname: a "ring of fire" eclipse.

Where to see it
An annular solar eclipse is set to take place on June 21 and will start at 9:15 AM IST. The eclipse will hit its peak at  12:10 AM IST. A solar eclipse like this one occurs only when the Moon is farthest from the Earth. However, it comes in between the Earth and the Sun blocking most of the Sun. Hence, it creates something called “ring of fire” that looks mesmerising.
It will be visible over central Africa, the southern Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, Northern India and South Central China, Young said. A partial eclipse will be seen over most of Asia, Africa, South and East Europe, northern Australia and parts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, he added.
The entire eclipse will last about 3.75 hours, but the duration as it passes over individual locations will equal to around a minute and a half. During the peak, that will actually shorten to just over 30 seconds..

Looking directly at the Sun can

Loss of the central vision

Distorted vision
Altered colour vision

If you watch any symptom after viewing the solar eclipse, rush to your doctor immediately.

Precautions that must be taken :
Some precautions that must be taken during solar eclipse :
-Avoid stepping out of home
-Do not to stare directly at the Sun
-use sun screen and fully cover your body to go outside
- Use UV protection goggles
Do not watch the Sun through dark tinted glasses or a phone camera. This is unsafe can lead to permanent vision loss.

Do not use homemade filters or sunglasses as they are not effective.

Avoid looking at the Sun through telescope, binoculars and any other optical device.

There are special solar filters available in the market to witness the eclipse.
Protective eyeglasses, binoculars, box projector or a telescope is advised to be used to safely witness the phenomenon.

Students of DAVPS Cambridge International Celebrating "World Environment Day, 5 June 2020"

World Environment Day is one of the biggest days of recognition for encouraging people worldwide to save and protect our environment from different environmental challenges the world is facing today. The World Environment is also “People’s Day” which is a day to do something to take care of our environment. It is an important platform for promoting the dimensions of environmental Sustainable Development Goals.

What is World Environment Day and when it is Celebrated?
World Environment Day is the biggest annual event in the world run by the United Nations to mark the environmental awareness among the people. Its main aim is to raise awareness to protect our nature and look at various environmental issues that are growing day by day. World Environment Day is celebrated every 5th of June. It is one of the main prime action to protect our environment.
Theme and Host Country for World Environment Day 2020
World Environment Day 2020 will focus on Biodiversity and will be hosted in Colombia in partnership with Germany. This year the theme of World Environment Day 2020 is “Celebrate Biodiversity”.
“With 1 million species facing extinction, there has never been a more important time to focus on biodiversity.”
Colombia is one of the largest “Megadiverse” nations in the world to hold  10% of the planet’s biodiversity. Since it is part of the Amazon rainforest,  Colombia ranks first in bird and orchid species diversity and second in plants, butterflies, freshwater fish, and amphibians.
Ricardo Lozano, Colombia’s Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development, Jochen Flasbarth, Germany’s Secretary of State for the Climate, and Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, said that with one million species of plants and animals facing extinction, there has never been a more critical time to focus on the problem of biodiversity. The year 2020 is a critical year for nations’ commitments to preserving and restoring biodiversity.
Why should we care about Biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the variation of Earth’s terrestrial, freshwater, and marine species, as well as their habitats. Biodiversity is vital to the survival of all life on earth and is also the cornerstone for the goods and services of the environment that allow human societies to thrive. Biodiversity provides us with food, water and resources as well as services such as climate control, pollination, flood mitigation and cycling of nutrients.
Ecosystems are relying on all parts from the smallest bacteria to the largest vertebrate. It’s all interconnected. Some are producing oxygen that others are breathing. Some provide food for larger species, which in turn become prey to even larger species. Every living organism has a role to play in the maintenance of balance.

You can ultimately lose much more than one species by removing one element. More than 98% of the species in nature are extinct.
Major factors that affect our Environment
  1. Air Pollution
  2. Overpopulation
  3. Deforestation
  4. Climate change
  5. Global warming
World environment day was designed by the UN General Assembly in 1972 on the
first day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment.
Since 1974 the World Environment Day became the global celebration with
the theme “Only One Earth”
