Investigating the Effect of Temperature on Diffusion
Aim
The aim of this investigation was to study the effect of temperature on the rate of diffusion and determine whether diffusion occurred faster at higher temperatures.
Introduction
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration due to their random movement. Temperature affects the kinetic energy of particles and therefore may affect the rate at which diffusion occurs.
Materials Required
Three identical beakers, cold water, room-temperature water, hot water, food colouring, dropper, thermometer and stopwatch.
Procedure
Equal volumes of water were poured into three identical beakers. The water in each beaker was maintained at a different temperature: cold, room temperature and hot. One drop of food colouring was carefully added to the centre of each beaker at approximately the same time. The water was not stirred. The movement of the colour through the water was observed, and the time taken for the colour to spread evenly was recorded. The investigation was repeated to improve the reliability of the results.
Variables
The independent variable was the temperature of the water, while the dependent variable was the time taken for the food colouring to diffuse. The volume of water, size of the beaker, amount of food colouring and method of adding the colouring were kept constant.
Observations and Results
The food colouring spread fastest in hot water, more slowly in room-temperature water and slowest in cold water. Therefore, the time required for diffusion decreased as the temperature increased.
Scientific Explanation
At higher temperatures, particles gain more kinetic energy and move more rapidly. Their increased random movement causes the food-colouring particles to spread throughout the water more quickly. At lower temperatures, particles have less kinetic energy and move more slowly, resulting in a slower rate of diffusion.
Conclusion
The investigation showed that temperature affects the rate of diffusion. As temperature increased, the rate of diffusion increased. Therefore, it was concluded that diffusion occurs faster at higher temperatures because particles have greater kinetic energy and move more rapidly.
